Next Chess Move Calculator
Drag pieces to move them · add pieces from the racks · right-click clears a square
One position, properly understood
Your next move, explained.
A free chess calculator for the question that matters: what's the best next move? Scan a digital board, paste a FEN, or build the position by hand. The chess next move calculator runs Stockfish 18 in your browser and returns the best move, the evaluation, and the main line without sending your position to a server.
How to find your next chess move
- Enter the position. Drag pieces onto the board, paste a FEN, or scan a screenshot, book diagram, or photo of a real board.
- Set the conditions. Choose whether White or Black is to move and how long the engine should think.
- Get the move. Stockfish 18 shows the best next move, two strong alternatives, and the evaluation. Play a suggestion to keep exploring the line.
Game over? Take the whole game to the free game review and see every move scored, not just one.
Next chess move questions
How does the next chess move calculator work?
The chess calculator runs Stockfish 18, the strongest open-source chess engine, as WebAssembly in your browser. Set up the position, choose a thinking time of 2, 4 or 8 seconds, and the engine returns the best next move it found along with the evaluation and its main line.
Can it read a position from a screenshot or photo?
Yes. Paste (⌘V), drop or upload a screenshot, book diagram or photo of a chessboard. For angled photos, place the four handles on the board corners and Chess411 corrects the perspective before reading the pieces. Any squares the scanner is unsure about are flagged so you can check them before asking the engine.
How do I find the next best chess move?
It always depends on the position, which is why a calculator beats memorized answers. From the starting position engines rate 1.e4 and 1.d4 almost equally; set up your actual position and you get the next best chess move for the game in front of you, plus the second and third choices so you can compare plans.
Can it calculate the next move for Black?
Yes. Set "To move" to Black and the engine calculates the best next move from Black's side; flip the board if you want to see the position the way Black does. It works for either color in any legal position.
Is using a chess move calculator cheating?
Used against a live opponent in a rated game, yes: that's a chess cheat, it breaks every platform's fair-play rules, and we don't recommend it. For analysing finished games, training, solving puzzles, or correspondence chess where engines are permitted, it's the same analysis the professionals use.
How strong is the engine?
Stockfish 18 is rated well above 3600, hundreds of points beyond any human world champion. At the default four-second think it reaches depths no player can calculate; give it eight seconds for the sharpest positions.
Is it really free and unlimited?
Yes. The engine and the screenshot scanner run on your device, not on our servers, so there is nothing to meter. No account, no move limits, no scan limits.
